The Main Characteristics and Molecular Structure of Plastics

The different properties of plastics determine its use in the industry. With the advancement of technology, research on plastic modification has not stopped. What are the main characteristics of plastics?
1. Most plastics are light in weight, chemically stable, and will not rust;
2. Good impact resistance;
3. It has good transparency and wear resistance;
4. Good insulation and low thermal conductivity;
5. The general formability and colorability are good, and the processing cost is low;
6. Most plastics have poor heat resistance, high thermal expansion rate and easy to burn;
7. Poor dimensional stability and easy to deform;
8. Most plastics have poor low temperature resistance, become brittle at low temperature and easy to age;
9. Some plastics are easily soluble in solvents.
10. Plastics can be divided into two categories: thermosetting and thermoplastic. The former cannot be reshaped for use, and the latter can be re-produced. Thermoplasticity has a large physical elongation, generally 50% to 500%. The force does not vary completely linearly at different elongations.

There are basically two types of molecular structures of plastics: the first is a linear structure, and the polymer compound with this structure is called a linear polymer compound; the second is a body structure, and the polymer compound with this structure is called a compound. It is a bulk polymer compound. Some polymers have branched chains, called branched polymers, which belong to a linear structure. Although some polymers have cross-links between molecules, but less cross-links, called network structure, belong to the body structure.
Two different structures, showing two opposite properties. Linear structure, heating can melt, less hardness and brittleness. The body structure has greater hardness and brittleness. Plastics have two structures of polymers, thermoplastics made of linear polymers, and thermosetting plastics made of bulk polymers.
